how to measure and install ceramic tile counter tops and back splash?
i need help putting up counter tops and back
splashes.(tile)
Usually you start with 3/4″ plywood screwed to the cabinets, ripped to the needed size. Then 1/2″ backerboard adhered with thinset mortar and fastened with screws or roofing nails, nails are quicker. You can substitute backerboard with Hardibacker, if you like. As far as tile, if you can get it, sink rail for the corners. It has an L-shaped cross section. If you want to save a bit, you can use bullnose, tile with one rounded edge. But it is a bit harder to install. The bullnose will want to slide off, so you need to tape it over night. And it does not always stay in place. Plus the sink rail has more surface area to bond. Field tile is just the tile in the middle. It has relatively square edges, like floor tile. In fact, if you want you can use floor tile. The backsplash, you can use field tile and bullnose to end the edge of the area to be covered. As long as the walls are solid, relatively flat, you can just use that as your substrate. There are so many different types and options I can’t even try to cover it. Visit some showrooms and do some web surfing. Look at interior design magazines. Design wise, you have many options.
You can use big or small tile, which ever. But there are a few things to consider. I’d stay away from soft natural stone, like travertine. I’d choose porcelain, or if more economically minded, ceramic. If the grout line is more than 1/8″ go with sanded grout, if smaller unsanded. If you do use a stone, it needs to be set with tight lines, because you need use unsanded grout. Sanded grout can scratch stone. Also with stone you need to seal the face of tile also. You seal stone, before you grout. I’d seal the grout or use TEC Accucolor XT. I was skeptical, until I saw it. The claims that it doesn’t need to sealed are true. Use a quality thinset mortar. Finally, you need to caulk the where the wall tile meets countertop tile. Just filling it with grout doesn’t work. Most grout manufacturers make a matching color of caulk.
I’m not sure about what you mean “how to measure”. You just overhang the edge an inch or so. Don’t overhang where the range or refrigartor goes. You order sink rail and bullnose by the linear foot, you can be pretty close in the measurement. Maybe throw in a few extra pieces, just to be sure, if you have a defective piece or make mistake. The field tile order by the square foot. Add maybe 2-5%, just to be sure and for waste.
